â Chapter 16 â
ANGELTERRA AWOKE AND just lay there, unmoving, with quilts and pillows nearly burying her. She stared up at the rugged heavy ceiling beams and thought of absolutely nothing of consequence. By the height of the morning sun beaming in the open window, she could tell it was about one turn of the hourglass before the noon. With all the nightmares that haunted her throughout the night, it was nearly dawn before she finally drifted off to sleep, so Angelterra was not at all surprised that she would awaken at such a late hour of the morning. A hummingbird must be hovering just out of her line of sight, she thought; its loud buzzing filled the room. The room was still cool from the chilly overnight air. She felt so warm and snug and comfortable in her fluffy soft cocoon that she wished she could stay here forever.
Then, it all came flooding back to her, the images of herself as a young girl opening the pouch, the scene of the young wizard doing the same thing.
Had she really opened her pouch as a child or was it just a false vision, an effect of the raw magic upon her mind?
She could not remember that event ever happening. It seemed impossible that she would ever have broken her solemn vow, made with a childâs conviction, to her beloved teacher, Lord Bazzleron, to never, ever open the pouch. All these years she had prided herself in keeping that promise.
How could this be correct? And what about the long stare the young wizard gave her after the binding ceremony, The Receiving? Did he know her secret about the pouch? Did he see Concera? Was she even supposed to have a pouch, not being a trained wizard?
Then, she thought of the first time she opened the pouch high atop the keep of the southern castle. When Concera first materialized, Angelterra did not experience the same binding, the Receiving, she had not felt the same intensity that Altirdron had when he opened his pouch for the first time.
Did I actually bind with Concera when I was just a young child?
â¦Hush now, Princess. Tis true, we have been together for a long time. And you have seen me many times before but you do not remember. But this day, still thy troubled mind and think no more upon it, came a comforting whisper of a womanâs voice in the back of her agitated mind, which seemed to soothe her nerves and tranquilize her incessant scrutiny.
Angelterra realized it was the same whisper that had finally helped her get to sleep last night. Angelterra began to feel herself relaxing so much she even became thoroughly drowsy. Her eyelids were becoming heavier and heavier.
Was that Conceraâs voiceâ¦.
After floating for a time, she heard a soft, short whistle that seemed to call to her from somewhere far off in the distance of her dreams.
What was that sound? A bird?
She heard it again, but this time much louder. Much too annoying to her floating mind to be a bird.
